Berson is a Professor of Social Science Education at the University of South Florida and a Senior Fellow in The Florida Joint Center for Citizenship. He coordinates the USF College of Education Ph.D. Program in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Social Science Education. Berson has received the USF Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, was twice chosen as the USF nominee for the United States Professor of the Year Program sponsored by CASE and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, was honored with the USF Institute on Black Life Advisory Committee Outstanding Faculty Service Award, was recognized for his service learning work by the University of South Florida Office of Community Engagement and Partnerships, and has received international recognition for integrating emerging technologies into instruction and modeling innovative pedagogy. He also was honored with the National Council for the Social Studies President's Award for outstanding contribution to the field and was selected for the Florida Council for the Social Studies International Relations Award for his research in global child advocacy. Berson has served as an advisor on cybersecurity and the integration of technology into education to companies and organizations throughout the world. Among his leadership positions, he was elected Chair of the College and University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies, Vice President of the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education, President of the Social Science Education Consortium, and a member of the Advisory Board for the International Society for the Social Studies.
Berson has extensively published books, chapters, and journal articles and presented his research worldwide. He was named the Association of Educational Publishers Distinguished Achievement Award Winner in the Learned Article category. He has been the principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or primary partner on grants from the United States Department of Education, Florida Department of Education, the Spencer Foundation, and the Library of Congress.
Berson is coauthor of Harcourt Social Studies. Howard - Program Author Tyrone C. Howard is a Professor of Education at UCLA in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies’ Urban Schooling Division.
He is the Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion. He is also the Director and Founder of the Black Male Institute at UCLA, which is an interdisciplinary cadre of scholars, practitioners, community members, and policy makers dedicated to improving the educational experiences and life chances of Black males. Professor Howard’s research is primarily concerned with academic achievement of youth in urban schools. His work has centered on the achievement gap facing African American and other culturally diverse students, and the importance of providing teachers the skills and knowledge to assist them in reversing persistent underachievement.
Howard has been a member on the UCLA faculty since 2001. Prior to his tenure at UCLA, he was a faculty member in the College of Education at The Ohio State University. Before entering higher education, Dr. Howard was a classroom teacher in the Compton Unified School District. A native of Compton, California, Dr. Howard is one of the foremost experts on race, culture, teaching and learning in urban schools. His book, Race, Culture, and the Achievement Gap, is a Teachers College Press bestseller examines the roles that race and culture play in educational outcomes.
Black Male(d): Peril and Promise in the Education of African American Males, examines the lives and identities of African American males in diverse contexts, and has recently become a bestseller. He is also coauthor of Expanding College Access for Urban Youth: What Schools and Colleges Can Do and Harcourt Social Studies.
Professor Howard has been a contributor on National Public Radio, CBS/KCAL news, the Los Angeles Times, the Huffington Post and is also a contributor to the New York Times Educational Issues Forum. Howard has published over 75 peer review journal articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entrees, and technical reports.
Howard is the recipient of the 2015 UCLA Distinguished Faculty Award, the highest honor provided to teaching excellence at the University. He was also recently awarded a lifetime achievement award for exemplary research on diversity by the American Educational Research Association, the nation’s largest, and most prestigious educational research organization. Howard is considered one of the foremost thinkers on race, equity, access and education in the country.
