2015 Evinrude Etec 130 Manual

2015 Evinrude Etec 130 Manual Average ratng: 9,4/10 740 reviews

I have been a boat owner for over 12 years, and operator for 20+. This summer I repowered with the 3 cylinder 90 HP etec on the hopes of trouble free operation and reliability. Unfortunately this has not been the case. The engine has had starting issues from day one. This is my 5th engine, 4th boat and recently while 20 miles out to sea, had to request Vessel Assist for the first time in my life.

To say I am disappointed that my largest boat investment has been this much of a struggle is an understatement. I have had the dealer run diagnostics, but the motor of course started up for him and the computer found nothing.

Since then I have narrowed down the problem and hope one of the experts can help out. I have taken the boat out a total of 6 times since purchasing it last month and have approx 25 hours on the motor.

From the first cranking over and continuing today the issues all have to do with the motor not starting. And by starting I mean every start. Run the engine for 2 hours, shut it down 5 minutes, try to restart and I have to struggle to get it started. The fishing season here is short and I don't want to sacrifice a day or more to take it to the dealer instead of a day on the water so I have had to resort to running the engine the entire trip (8-10 hours) in order to not chance getting stranded.

The engine runs great once it has started. I have narrowed the cause down to the gasoline not getting to the engine on startup. I suspect an air leak in the lines in the engine. On EVERY start (even after running the engine and it is still hot), I have to pump the bulb until it is rock hard, then I have to hold and squeeze for 5-10 seconds more. Then crank the engine which turns over, fires once, and then dead. Attempt 2 more crank and fires then back to the bulb, squeeze and hold to pressurize, then back to cranking. This second or sometimes third cycle usually starts the motor.

The engine runs great even at full RPMs for the rest of the day. No sputtering or loss of fuel.

If I shut it off for 5 minutes, I go back to square one starting over again. The time I called Vessel Assist I could not get it started for 45 minutes, running my battery low on trying to start the motor. I eventually got it started prior to Vessel Assist arriving by squeezing the bulb between both hands using my full body strength. While squeezing the bulb I can sometimes hear an audible slight whistle coming from the engine, suggesting that air is being pressurized out of the fuel line by the bulb. I also assume that cranking the engine over with the line pressurized is removing some of the air in the line allowing the fuel in. Needless to say this experience has not met my expectations. Yes, I have had multiple engines and none have given me this recurring issue.

The problem is isolated in the engine (as opposed to the fuel tank, line, filter, bulb) as there is no issue with picking up fuel or maintaining fuel to the engine while it is running. The gasoline was new to start with (I even drained the tank and ran it through my car on the dealer recommendation) and I have run through 3 tanks of brand new gasoline so it is not a fuel issue. The batteries are brand new and the electrical passed the voltage drop test and I have the terminal connections secured with bolts not wing nuts. If you have any suggestions on what the issue may be so that I can have some information when I take it to the dealer I would appreciate it. If you need any further information please contact me. Thank you BTW: The diagnostic software calculates only the number of times the engine has successfully started, not the number of startup attempts. My dealer disagrees with me on this but I know how many times I have attempted to start the engine and the answer was no where near the total '12' times his diagnostic software came up with.

Cranking attempts would be a useful diagnostic tool and indicator of engine reliability as you could compare the number of successful starts versus attempts. The dealer will want to watch the 55V circuit when the engine is being cranked and also find out what the cranking RPM is becasue if too low they can be hard to start. You should try and run on a portable tank but if there is fuel in the engines fuel system and pretty easy to check this will a prssure gauge hooked up to the Low and high pressure test ports then I doubt it is fuel related. On you bit about the number of times it counts the start-up, you are mistaken and if the engine cranks but will not start the count goes up by one on the indentification page of the dia software-it is not live and if you watch the monitor screen and then go to the ID page it will have gone up by one each time.If not on your engine then that would be a good clue as to a possible cause on the crank/no start situation. Make sure you check the boats wiring harness- I am guessing it is a genuine hanress with genuine control box. My etec 150 is a 2013 and until this year has worked flawlessly. When I put it in the water in May 2018 after the Michigan winter it started right up like it always has.

After driving it for 10-15 min I came to my dock and parked it. 15 min later I tried turning the key to start it. It cranks but no start. Ive never had to squeeze the fuel ball but tried a couple times any way. Still wouldnt start.

After letting the engine sit for 2-3 hrs, I tried starting again. It started right up. I took it out for a ride and it ran fine for 20 min. I came back to the dock and turned it off. 2 min later,I tried starting again. It would not start. It seems like the problem is consistent.

I currently have an appointment to bring it to a Evinrude dealer for service, but being the beginning of the season, I have to wait for 3 weeks for the appointment. Did you ever get your issue resolved? What was the resolution? Thanks for any input. Carl ceedubb84@gmail.com.
