I'm new to the forester so i don't know any security flaws it may have. I'm wondering what we can do to protect our cars besides the obvious: not leaving anything in plain view, having stickers saying you own a nice stereo, etc. I know that security systems are only a deterrent but i'd like to implement a few things just to make it that much less of a target. Afterall, having rims and suspension is almost a giveaway that you spent money on the inside as well. For example: honda civics are notoriously easy to break into. The hood latch cable is routed in the driver side fender under the plastic wheel well liner. Thieves can easily slash the liner and actuate the cable, unlocking the hood w/o even having to get inside.

Knowing this, i was able to reroute the cable into the cabin and through the firewall. Please chime in, if there is a major security flaw that can be addressed, i'd like to know about it.

Knowing this, i was able to reroute the cable into the cabin and through the firewall. ^ if you stick your hand through the grille, you can force the cable (close to the hood latch) with a finger and still pop the hood that way.
Hoodpins or the hood locks were the only way to go. Man taF, for some reason I REALLY like that picture. Keeping your car cleen is the #1 deterrent though. That and hiding your blingy stereo. I, unfortnately, was subject to a theft when I had my Legacy. They stole my school books (filled with term papers I was writing), and my stereo. They also spilled lemonade all over the console (most of which they broke), and I couldn't tell, but they might have peed in the car (the car NEVER smelled the same again).
Dark tint did nothing to prevent the break-in. Honestly, I don't think anyone will really discuss this subject, as thieves can read message boards too.and I for one am not going to discuss this subject where the wrong someone might be able to read it. But you dont have to if you dont want to. The way i see it: most thieves savvy enough to read the boards or search the internet will find plenty enough information on the internet for what they are trying to do. This stuff will hopefully prevent the random bottom feeder thief from targeting your car or getting into it with ease.
We obviously can't do much about professional thieves who make a living stealing cars. Here is a tip that wont compromise the security. The subaru frameless doors are terrrible for us. Thieves simply pry the window open at the top and slip a long flat pole in and hit the door unlock button. This takes seriously 5s.

This is a common techniqe that they use on other framed cars too, so not unique to ours. My buddy had this happen to him. What I did, when you get your alarm, ask the installer to put a relay so that when the alarm is armed, it disables the door unlock button. Tihs way, when they hit that door unlock button when the alarm is active, it doesn't unlock the doors, and they will now have to resort to breaking teh windows. The relay is like $5bux and the labour should be free since it's covered by the alarm install.
