Course Description: Welcome to AP Biology! Advanced Placement Biology is a college-level course designed to conform to the Educational Testing Service Advanced Placement Biology program. Appropriate, and ESSENTIAL, lab experiences are used which emphasize qualitative, quantitative and instrumental methods of analysis. Lab activities are a key component to the course; participation and effort are required. All students are expected to take the Advanced Placement Biology Exam in May, which may earn college credit and/or advanced standing. Course Goals: The two main goals of AP® Biology are: 1.
To help students develop a conceptual framework for modern biology 2. To help students gain an appreciation of science as a process. The subject of biology is constantly changing not only due to technological advances and ambitious young biologists leading to new biological discoveries, but also to the flattening of the world with infinite internet resources; breaking down the international borders and uniting biologists as equals, but also creating competition for research and careers.
In order for AP Biology students to excel through these changes, a grasp of science as a process rather than as an accumulation of facts; personal experience in scientific inquiry; recognition of unifying themes that integrate the major topics of biology; and application of biological knowledge and a grasp of critical thinking to environmental and social concerns. South Dakota State University Dr. Anna Oller has been a faculty member at Central since 2000 and has worked her way up the ranks to Professor. She obtained her B.A. In Clinical Laboratory Sciences from Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska, and rotated through her clinicals in Iowa to become board certified. She obtained her Ph.D.
From South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota with an emphasis in Microbiology and Molecular Biology. She is a member of several organizations: American Society for Microbiology, American Society for Clinical Pathologists, and Missouri Academy of Science. She is currently the Councilor of the Missouri Branch of ASM. She currently serves as a Medical Technology, Radiologic Technology, Pre-Vet, Pre-Med, and Pre-Professional areas advisor. She is a sponsor of several student organizations: Para-Medico, Phi Sigma Pi, and the Pre-Veterinary club. Oller currently teaches Biol 3611 Microbiology with lab, Biol 4516 Hematology/Virology (taught every other Spring), Biol 4517 Serology lab (currently every other Spring), Biol 4311 Parasitology and lab (Fall), and Biol 5614 Bioterrorism (taught every other Spring).
She has also served on many departmental, college, and university committees and helped write letters for over 50 students who were successfully admitted to graduate and professional programs. Oller’s research interests include polysaccharide and melanin regulation mechanisms in the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans, Staphylococus aureus transmission mechanisms, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, food microbiology, and ecological relationships to disease. Almost any topic dealing with clinical microbiology is of interest.
