I check my compression with a cold engine. My Dads 1997 Skandic WT 500F has close to 125psi on both cylinders and that machine has only 1900KM on it. My skandic SUV 600HO 2003 had 135psi at 800KM. Now at 2200km I've got 121psi on the right cylinder, nad 125psi on the left.

Ps is your 500 a Fan, or L/c? Hope this helps, Cheers, Ray The 1996 Skandic 500 is a fan cooled motor. Funny you have so much compression on the 1997 as the specs for that motor from factory manual claims 6.2:1 which equates to 97PSI at sea level. UNLESS the specs listed are those for a MINIMUM operating compression? As I said earlier in the post, mine is at 100psi and it starts OK but it takes three good pulls from cold fresh start. The machine has 5200km (3000miles) which is not much at all.

I do plan to install new carb kits this summer, and was 'considering' putting in new pistons/rings/honning. Thanks for the information! The 1996 Skandic 500 is a fan cooled motor.

Well 5000km is getting up there, I think in most cases, a two stroke engine starts getting really tired after 8000km and is close to needing an over haul. Kepping in mind my dad's sled has less than 2000km, thus it's almost new and the measuremnts was actually taken with a cold engine.(thus the 125psi). Ps i am interested how you convert the 6.2:1 to 97psi, could you break down that equation for us?

Thanks, Ray There are numerous web sites that state the same as here; its a simple calculation of multiplying the number by 14.7 so 6.2X14.7=91PSI Dont know where I got 97psi from.
