I'm going to change the oil in my diffs, T-case and transmission (manual) on my 94 tracker. I'm not sure on the brand or type of oil to use. I know to use 75-w90 because I'm going to be using it in the winter here in MN.

But I'm a bit confused on the standards (GL4 and GL5). Ive read that only GL4 can go into the T-case and tranny, but I cant find it any where. Can I use oil that claims its for GL4 and 5? Also I'm wondering if its worth to you synthetic, its $11 for mobil 1 compared to $6. What specific oil should I use? Have not done the Tranny nor the Rear Differential yet but I did the Front Differential since that one is not used much. I used Mobil1 75 W 90 GL5 and seems fine.

Been there for 2 years so far and no leaks has been developed yet. Here is what the Owner's Manual says: SAE 75W-90 GL-4 (GM Part No. 12346074 Castrol‘ Syntorq GL-4 or equivalent) or SAE 75W-90 GL-5 Gear Lubricant. Front Differential. (1.0 L) Four-wheel Drive. ( 1.5 L).

Two-Wheel Drive. (1.7 L). Rear Differential.

I had an issue finding GL-4 for my xfr case a couple of weeks back so I just threw in some GL-5 valvoline 80w-90. Since I had that left over from the diffs. Most folks on here would suggest a strict no GL-5 diet on the transfer case and transmission because it tends to eat the metals on the synchros. Though a few users say there are no synchros in the transfer case and one would be fine using GL-5 in the transfer. Wouldn't risk it with the manual trans though. Funnily enough 2 days after I threw it in the transfer case I found, in my dad's workshop, 2 quarts of Texaco gear oil that had GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5 ratings. Check older shops and older gas stations for GL-4.

I still can't find any on the island anywhere except the two quarts my dad has. All the folks locally with manual transmissions say they use the GL-5 stuff.

Though they are few and far between despite the extremely high density of Escudo/tracker/sidekick on the island. While you are looking for GL-4 you can also look for 'Synchromesh oil'. That is said to work as well. The AutoGuide.com network consists of the largest network of enthusiast-owned enthusiast-operated automotive communities. This video shows you how to add transmission fluid to your 2003 Suzuki Grand Vitara. Before adding transmission fluid, make sure that your engine was running when you checked the fluid level. If the transmission fluid level on your Grand Vitara is low, you need to add fluid through the dipstick tube. Suzuki has been developed sophisticated transmissions through years and it is critical that you add the exact type of transmission fluid stipulated by your owner's manual (typically in the back of the manual in a section titled Fluid Capacities.) When adding transmission fluid to your Grand Vitara, be sure to add it slowly as the transmission fluid capacity is reached quickly and it is difficult to remove excess fluid if you overfill. If you are having problems with the transmission in your Grand Vitara, such as clunky shifting or hesitation, check the fluid level first - it is amazing how many drivers pay thousands of dollars for transmission work when a half quart of transmission fluid would have fixed the problem.
